?? How has
been the capital investment scenario in Assam during your
tenure?
There
is lot of enthusiasm to invest in Assam because of the very tangible
political commitment and conducive atmosphere
in Assamtoday. We have confirmed investments of about Rs.15000
crores in next five years such as Bongaigaon
Thermal Green Field Power Project (750 mw) Rs. 3051
crores, Assam Gas Cracker Project Rs.5500 crores,
Modernisation of civic amenities in Guwahati
city Rs.3100 crores, New investment
in the road sector Rs.1850 crores besides other assorted
industrial investments in the tune of
Rs. 1000 crores.
??
What do You propose to do to attract the MNCs in to
Assam?
Several
MNCs are already investing in Assam
such as Unilever Group, Premier Oil,
Canaro Inc besides Indian MNC like TCS is coming forward
to invest in today’s Assam.
Others are likely to follow.

Your comments on gainful employment of rural youth?
Mine
is a very chequered
career ! I always hobnobbed with
the Congress party even when I was the General Secretary of Cotton
College Students Union in the late 70’s, but I never neglected my
studies and did reasonably well. I also worked as a company executive
and saw rapid career progression. But gave up my job to become a
self employed professional. While consolidating my own business
in Guwahati in the 90’s I renewed contacts with the Congress
party and became the official spokesman of the party prior to 1996
elections. Do you know I am quite a veteran politician today as
this is my third term as an elected MLA and second term as a minister
of the state !
??
Your strength and your weaknesses ?
Mystrength
is my sincerity and my weakness is my inability to cope up with
the Machiavellian onslaught against me in the present political
turf of the state !
??
Your family ?
I
am
married to Rani and we have two sons. Prateekis elder in
class IX and Raniz is younger in class VI. Rani
looks after my business in Guwahati
while I keep busy as a serving minister. After all politics is not
my bread and butter !
